Why

Renewable sources of energy are at the forefront of my current designs. As an artist, I believe it is my responsibility to not only enhance environments visually, but to communicate ideas and ideals to my audience.

What

I create minimal abstract designs that act as a universal language of symbols that communicate globally beyond the barriers of linguistics. As I have always found solace and inspiration in nature, I have chosen to re-use and recycle materials in my quest to help preserve it. Soundscape is an exploration of art and science, blending beauty with function. The solar-fabric-clad structure uses its power generation ability to ring suspended Tibetan Singing Bowls and power evening lights in and around the installation, creating a peaceful auditory healing environment. At the base of the three-legged parabolic dome, seating elements contain batteries and outlets capable of powering electronic devices for people who desire working in natural outdoor environments. The power source applications extend beyond the sculpture and into the surrounding landscape.

How

By inviting the viewer to move through an interactive Soundscape, I encourage pause, reflection and inquiry. The elliptical structures are semi-covered outdoor gathering spaces. Visually, the clear linearity is instantly recognizable through the contrast of light and shade and through the balance of texture, color and natural material surfaces.

Soundscapes invite the viewer into the structure, and the movement triggers the solar-powered auditory system to play. Meditative sound vibrations relax and awaken the senses. They offer a unique experience of transformation, where the observer becomes engaged and aware, and the alternative energy solutions become the focus and the platform for thought and dialogue. These structures provide community space that is both educational and functional. As sacred space for the public, sited in locations such as hospital healing gardens or university campuses, these meditative places invite a moment for reflection and contemplation. In these settings, the solar-powered Soundscapes have the ability to harness energy and store it to supply power for the structure’s electrical outlets and for lighting solutions around the piece.
